Benjamin
Dear New Friends, I found these mushrooms growing in my back yard. They were growing under a rock next to a pine tree around a bunch of redwood bark that was placed on the ground. I live in northern Los Angeles County. Elevation of my home is 3000 feet. I wanted to know if I can eat them and I wanted to learn about what they are. Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thank You! Ben
Dave W
I think these represent one of difficult-to-ID brown-capped Tricholoma species. Some of these species occur exclusively in western NA, some in eastern NA, and some are believed to be widely distributed in NA. Some species names to check are T. pessundatum, T. muricatum, T. dryophilum, among others. The dark edges on the gills seem like a distinctive trait, but I haven't found a description of a brown Trich that mentions this. None of the brown Tricholomas are recommended for eating (except for T. caligatum, which these are not). Some of these types are known to be poisonous.
