Dave W
The lack of either a ring on the stalk or any other evidence suggesting this Amanita may have had a partial veil, together with the sack-like membranous basal volva (remains of universal veil), point to section Vaginatae. This is an interesting one; I haven't seen many with the combination of white cap and multiple patches of universal veil on the cap. Section Vaginatae of genus Amanita includes (presumably) multiple undocumented species in North America. Amanitologist Rod Tulloss is currently studying this section. If this mushrooms has bee preserved --dehydrated-- I am certain that Dr. Tulloss would be interested in examining it (possibly also that dark one posted the other day). I don't have a solid ID proposal, but I think the following species deserves consideration. Amanita albiceps http://www.amanitaceae.org/?Amanita+albiceps . This species is reported as having no volva (universal veil) on the cap. However, it's likely that there haven'y been many conformed examples of this species subject to study. Note that the gills are reported as having a salmon tint. Night Crow, did your specimen seen here have salmon tinted gills? Kinda looks like it in your photo. Here's another depiction https://www.mycoquebec.org/bas.php?trie=A&l=l&nom=Amanita albiceps Y. Lamoureux nom. prov. / Amanite à tête blanche&tag=Amanita albiceps&gro=13 Here's the "section Vaginatae" page from the Amanita Studies Website. Note how the bottom of the list includes many numerically coded names. These are proposed new species (although it's possible there's some overlap). http://www.amanitaceae.org/?section+Vaginatae
