Could someone get me in the ballpark on this one?

This is very likely an example of what used to be called Polyporus badius  http://www.mushroomexpert.com/polyporus_badius.html . During the past couple years or so, the genus has changed... for awhile it was Royoporus badius    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royoporus_badius . Most recently, I think it's been Picipes badius   http://mushroomobserver.org/name/show_name/58383 .  Color of the cap varies for this species. Flesh is pliable when young, but becomes very rigid/tough.

I think the black stalk (base) is overemphasized for P. badius. Here's a Mushroom Observer observation of P. badius showing multiple fruit bodies that lack the dark stalks.   http://mushroomobserver.org/175825?q=CEv7  .  This is my own observation; I can't see where the mushrooms could be anything other than P. badius. The observation was without a doubt viewed by many people who would know if there's another possibility for the ID.
