angela
My neighbor had me come over to look at a mushroom on a stump. She told me to take it with me. i first got a few pictures in place. For size, I put my knife in the picture. It's a standard Opinel mushroom knife. I put the mushroom on my freezer at home and got shots of the top and bottom. My neighbor thinks the dirty old mushroom in the picture of the mushroom in place are old versions of the same fungus. This mushroom is surprisingly squishy. It sort of has the texture of a closed-cell foam. It just started raining/snowing so the mushroom is wet. It sort of seemed to bruise brownish where I squeezed it. If I find out what kind of tree the stump is, I'll post it.
angela
It's on a tulip poplar stump.
Dave W
I'd bet $17.50 --my personal limit is $20-- the polypore in the forefront on the photo is a young Ischnoderma resinosum (aka. "Resin Polypore") http://www.mushroomexpert.com/ischnoderma_resinosum.html. The old mushroom in the background... I'd bet $5 this is also I. resinosum. angela
Thanks for the help with the identification. The description of the resin polypore is consistent with my mushroom.
