angela
There hasn't been much to find around here, so I brought these home so I could play with my bolete key book. I almost always fail with boletes I think are suillus. These were found under pines (mostly loblolly) in Richmond, VA. There were also oaks and other hardwoods in the area, but these were coming up in pine duff. The tops are tacky. There is no hint of staining blue. There is a weird, slimy, sticky ring around the stipe near the top. The actual flesh is sort of a pale apricot color. The tops are 2.5" to 3" in diameter. I have no plans to eat them, but I would like to know what they are. Any thoughts?
Matt McDermott
Thinking sullius luteus? Slippery Jack.
Dave W
Suillus... Yes. Suillus luteus looks like a good ID.
angela
I got a spore print this morning, and it was a shade of brown so that is consistent with slippery jack. Thanks!
