svs
It finally rained in northeast. Brings some hope for the fall mushrooms. Can't go out untill weekend. Will it be too late?
Old Oak
Same here! We got >5” in Nebraska. Bought time! I saw some little hens fruiting yesterday. Gonna give em a day or two then snatch them up.
MattVa
I was hoping we would get some from this system but my area didn't get enough to knock down the dust.
eat-bolete
we got about half an inch, hopefully it's enough. As of now, all barren.
MattVa
Yeah, I went out this evening and only found one flush of Honeys and they where very buggy. I think I found enough clean ones for one meal.....it's partched here to say the least.
eat-bolete
The only thing I know for sure that will be out there in a pine forest in a few days is red-capped Leccinums. Soil under needle duff retains moisture very well. Chicken and beefsteaks should make more appearances as well. Weather is still very warm here...who knows, maybe hens will come back. Evan
We are finally getting some rain, too. Its been a month! Maybe we will get a late flush of hens.
svs
I usually pick a bucket of red cap Lecciniums every year in October. I have not seen much so far this year (found 2 couple weeks ago). 2 or 3 years ago October was so dry none showed up
MattVa
I have only found a couple baby hens and trees that produced several last year have produced nothing. It's still early for me compared to last fall,I was later in October finding hens but I am further south than most of you guys.
CamilleR
We finally had rain with a cold front and hopefully a few chilly nights will get the hens going. Last year I found my first ones 10/15.
svs
After couple decent rains in southern NJ I went to check few places where I usually find hens, honeys, suillus, red cap Leccinum in October. Came home empty. Just few wormy Suillus and couple white mushrooms I will put on identification forum. This year I saw unusually high number of hens and honeys around mid September. May be that’s it? May be they will not show up again in October? I still see old, disintegrating hens here and there but no new one.
CamilleR
Svs do you find any hens by old stumps? Last year I found some by black oaks early in the season then around 1st week of November I found a few by old stumps. Just my second year hunting them. svs
I will keep looking. So far I see only remains of old hens, left from September
Old Oak
I usually find them associated with red oaks in my neck of the woods. I’ve also had years where they fruit early and that’s it. Hope you still get some!
eat-bolete
Wow the woods are ridiculously empty, what is going on, where are the mushrooms?!
Old Oak
I think that in my case, there was so little rain over the summer (it didn't rain for about 2 1/2-3 months) that it didn't allow for any underground growth over the summer. We just got 6 inches of rain over the course of a couple weeks and there are very few hens when they should be blowing up....we'll see what the next few weeks bring. CamilleR
Here we still had summertime temps last week and it's just now feeling like fall. Only a little over an inch of rain this month though. I'll keep checking my spots till deer season.
Staveshaver
The woods are barren of mushrooms here in western Pa too. It was dry for several weeks, but we've been getting a little rain lately, still, nothing. Maybe it's too late for hens, maybe we still need more rain. CamilleR
Well we had a decent soaking rain for a couple nights and someone a couple counties away from me found baby hens. Hopefully I'll find something Saturday. Going to have a hard freeze this weekend.
MattVa
Found a good sized hen last Friday ,no bugs but it was very tough and not edible,I tried to eat it.. It must have popped when during the dry spell . Hopefully I get to go in the next few days...been awhile.
