jlmorgan84
I found these growing in the front yard all around a big sweet gum tree. Any idea? A small red russula of some kind? The spore print is very faint but appears to be lighter in color, white or cream.
angela
I think you are right about their being russulas. I know some red russulas will make you sick. I don't know if any are okay to eat.
Dave W
There are many species of Russula that produce red mushrooms. Difficult to say what we see here... except, they're Russulas. The ones that are acrid/bitter tasting are known to cause sickness. But, after they are boiled three times in three waters, they may be okay to prepare as food. This is what my grandmother's generation of immigrant Americans did to render mixed collections of Russulas edible. With only a few exceptions, red/reddish Russulas are mediocre edibles at best.
