Adawg
Incredible haul .. Congrats ! I am not fond of chickens, but could be I just don't know how to prepare them . Also very tough except the outside edges . Just my opinion ..

MattVa
I have yet to find any this year that won't thin and dry. Adawg , I have never considered them to be favorite either but I believe im always finding past prime specimens. I found some black staining polypore this year that had just started poping with very thick, juicy fronds and I thought it was very good and tender. So I believe that could be the case with the chicken....at least for me.
eat-bolete
I tried them in every possible condition, don't like it, so I leave them be, just take photos.

CamilleR
Wow! I don't think I've seen that much from one log before. My husband says it's the mushroom that doesn't taste like mushroom.

They need to be picked when very young and thick with juice. The Cincinnatus are generally thicker and taste better. I have also found the young black stainer to be very good. MattVa
I was surprised with black stainer, I have never read where anyone had mentioned it being much more than just edible. I could have picked a ton of young thick fronds in several places but didn't and never made it back in time.
benjammin
this one was totally flowing with juices when i picked it, and very delicous. i also think it is the mushroom that does not taste like a mushroom. very different and when so fresh i like them breaded and fried with ranch. a perfect little snack.
