Woodswalker
Can you guys confirm that this is a berkeleys polypore? What is the best way to cook and eat this rascal? big chuck, I love you man!
Dave W
I think this is an old example of Berkeley's Polypore. Some people eat this type mushroom when it's very young and tender. This past summer I sampled some that was shredded and marinated/pickled. It was very good like this. But, the one] seen here is well past prime. I think it's best to not attempt to prepare it in any way once it's this old.
Woodswalker
Thanks a lot Dave! I'll scrap this one! It seemed pretty tough when I sliced it, but nice and white inside. Do you have any pictures of earlier stage berkeleys that i can reference as being the right stage to eat?
Dave W
Here's one that's probably at a good stage for eating http://mushroomobserver.org/139764?q=8xgV . Be careful with B. berkeleyi. Some people are sensitive to it; there are reports of very unpleasant reactions.
