Matt McDermott
Silver violet corts?
The Vault Dweller
This is strange. The cap and stem should be a much darker purple for that species. Other purple species I've checked in my guide don't quite look like this either.
vitog
I think that Matt was referring to Cortinarius alboviolaceus, which does have a light colored cap and stem; only the gills are darker. That looks like a good match; but according to Michael Kuo in MushroomExpert.com, this species has a preference for birch trees. Were there any near this find? Matt McDermott
Thanks for the replies. And actually there were some yellow birch in the area, I will have to check on how close to this specimen the next time I walk that property. And again, Thank you both for the input! Dave W
There are at least several species of Cortinarius that feature silvery cap and purple gills. For the most part, a very difficult genus to decipher.
