Jmichael
Hi, I'm new to this site and just getting into Mushroom Identification. I've read a couple threads and seen other peoples identified so here goes mine! It was growing out of the soil at the base of a large maple tree. Matt McDermott
Possibly Oudemansiella radicata.

When I picked it the root seemed to barely budge and that species seems to have a deep root. I have the cap on white paper trying to get a print so if I don't see one then I guess it's a good bet that you're probably right.
Dave W
Yup, a species of Oudemansiella. There are several of the rooting types that are difficult to distinguish from one another. The most common in NA seems to be O. furfuracea. Formerly, these "rooters" were placed in genus Hymenopellis, before that genus Xerula, and before that Collybia.
