Wood ears

 While passing one of my oyster trees today I seen these, I have never found these particularly interesting but these where in much better shape then I had seen before so I figured I would take few pics. What do you guys think -Auricularia auricula-judae?

Found a cool use for these. I haven't tried it yet. There's a restaurant in Minneapolis that lacto ferments these for three days. You can't eat them straight but they add a huge umami boost when used in other dishes. I'll give it a try one of these days and report back.

Yup, Auricularia. The most common NA species is now called A. americana (last I checked... These things tend to change quickly.) When I find them I dry them and use in stir-fries or soup.Old Oak's idea sounds interesting.

Angela, I found them on a very large and fallen shagbark hickory. Sorry for the slow response I just got back home from the weekend outing, NO service where I go.-Matt
