William
I am (almost) 100% certain these are reishi mushrooms. Can somebody double check cause I'm new at mushroom hunting. I should also state that they bruise red and the stem is REALLY tough.
William
Oh wait... these aren't shiny, these are another species of polypore oops. can someone tell me which one?
Dave W
Correct, Reishi should have a shiny/varnished cap surface, at least before the fruit body is well past prime. Also, the pores on most Ganoderma species --genus which houses all Reishi species-- are very small, usually requiring minor magnification to see. I don't know Australian polypores, but I think I tracked down what you have here, William. A key is the red bruising that eventually turns black. Your mentioning the red bruising was key to the Amauroderma rude proposal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amauroderma_rude
