1shotwade
Sorry y'all, no pictures but I just found my first ever hen of the woods. Actually there were two and a black-staining polypore around the "huge" white oak that I harvested the berkley's from last year. They were all too far gone to do anything with but I'm very pleased to finally find them in my area! Hope it's a sign of the future. The only one left on my wish list is black trumpets! Lilion
Isn't it exciting you find them? It's like a treasure hunt.
Tamara
My husband's Japanese aunt calls hens "the dancing mushrooms." When I asked her why, she looked at me like I was a little dense and said, "Because when you find them, you dance!"
1shotwade
I'll remember to do that when and if I ever find one that I can consume!I just drove past a friends house and saw something out in the woods. It was about 20 chickens on a dead downed log. All of them also were too far past prime. These surgeries were just enough to throw me out of time with the 'srooms! Tasso
"Maitake (舞菇) means "dancing mushroom" in Japanese. The name came about because according to legend, it was so rare that one who found it danced with joy. Maitake has long been prized for its culinary appeal and reported medicinal qualities by the Japanese since the feudal era. In those days, Maitake was exchanged with the same weight of silver by local lords who, in turn, offered it to their boss, the Shogun." http://www.makansutra.com/stories/6/1467/MaitakeMushroomOnceworthitsweightinGold

Old Oak
Worth its weight in silver!! The local chefs are only giving me $10-13/lb. Not cool... Not being serious of course.
