Recommended Posts

Hello everybody.I was out in the woods today and found a post-182-0-43157400-1317153102_thumb.jpgfew mushrooms and i dont have a clue what they are. Here are some pics. any help would be great . thanks

Hi blue ridge shroomer --

Not enough information for ID'ing the first one. Best if you dig it up, brush off the base, and take a picture of the whole thing next time. Also, it's helpful to get a shot under the cap, to see if there are gills, pores, or spines there. A cross section from top to bottom can also help.

Second looks like a shelf fungus, and kind of like meat or liver. Did it have a harder white layer of pores under the top surface? May POSSIBLY be Fistulina hepatica, beefsteak polypore. For these, top and bottom views help, and a cross section if possible (they can be VERY hard or woody)

Lastly, NEVER eat anything you're not 100% sure of.

Good hunting!

Hi Feral Boy,thanks for the quick response. here are a few more pictures that may help. sorry about the quality, they are taken on my phone. It is yellowish white underneath and stains light reddish brown.

I just saw beefsteak polypore for the first time down in NC. Still looks

similar to it to me. As for the other one, yellow A. muscaria looks possible,

but we can't be at all sure with that one photo.

May not be enough information for 100% ID, but as someone who sees thousands of yellow A. Muscaria, it looks close enough that I wouldn't go further with the ID process, at least not for eating purposes. If one it IDing just for the sake of IDing, then yeah, more info
