alooney11
Well think I'm done for the season, this was my first ever big hit and left about another 100lbs in the woods. Wow!

Old Oak
Awesome! You can sell them to local restaurants too if you wanna make a few extra bucks.
John Smalldridge
Once again I'm envious of those of you that have hens. I've not yet found one locally.
alooney11
Super clean hens, strange thing was these were smack in the middle of a field. There were other hens in the woods but these were just growing on the ground closest tree maybe 100 ft away.
Bradley
Wow! I've never seen a field hen before. They sure are beauties! I found my first one on a birch tree this year. This is today's haul, the hens all came off red oaks.

alooney11
@Bradley Awesome haul there bud! I will have to keep an eye out for those white looking ones, so far I am nailing the hens but thats all I am finding.
Bradley
Thanks, the white mushrooms are bears beard. Similar to lions main and comb tooth. I usually find one or two of these during miatake season. I normally find them tucked away in the dark shadows of the forest. Also have found them on maples. Good luck Photo is of lions main
CWlake
Well done fellas! Alooney, them are the most pristine hens that I've seen. I've seen them in yards all alone. Most likely there was an oak there at one time. John S., Not sure where you are looking but I know someone from N.C. that finds a lot of hens. I find mostly in urban areas. Old city parks with old oak groves. I don't even hunt in woods for hens.
flipjargendy
So many pounds of good mushroom! I gave most of my harvest (one 3.4lbs hen) to a friend who cooked up a bunch and then dehydrated and ground up the rest for use in soup. I tasted a little bit of the ground up stuff and it was amazing. If you don't think you'll eat all of it, definitely grind it up. Or do you freeze it? themess1
Very nice! My next feat is a giant hen.

I haven't tried drying yet, I sauté them down and vacuum pack then freeze. On 10/13/2016 at 4:15 PM, themess1 said: Very nice! My next feat is a giant hen. Old Oak
I don't think it was the first time on that tree. I got one of a similar sized one from what I think is the same tree last year...it's a ways into the forest and as you can see it's pretty thick in that area.
