Missourigirl
What kind of mushroom is this? It is a rather firm mushroom without gills. It's located in my yard between a few trees, mostly oak. Although it's not right next to one of the trees it is likely to be very near their root system. It's about the size of my hand. I live out in the country at the moment so this isn't some manicured lawn.
eat-bolete
Hard to tell from one photo, also kind of blurry. Try to take a photo of the underside as well. Does it have a strong scent? Does the flesh change color when bruised? is the cap surface dry or slimy?
Dave W
The smaller piece appears to show "tubes" on the underside of the cap. These are the short/straight tiny passageways for spores to fall out of the pores, the terminal ends of the pores. Instead of gills, boletes have pubes/pores. So I think you are correct Missourigirl. But, need to see additional details clearly in order to propose anything more specific.
