ChefsWild
The smell is neutral but the taste is not particularly good. Mixed hardwood with plenty of pine, Raleigh NC. Huge, robust mushrooms with a hard texture. I initially thought they were puffballs before they opened.
Dave W
Not a Tricholoma, but close. Catathelasma ventricosum, a tough-fleshed mushroom that resembles White Matsutake. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/catathelasma_ventricosum.html
brianf
Tricholoma confuses the heck out of me. Dave, is white matsutake an armillaria or a tricholoma? Or was it tricholoma then placed into armillaria? Or vice versa....? I haven't found white matsutake in yeeeeeeeeeears. As evidenced by my confusing a hypomyces amanita for it months before white matsutake even occurs earlier this season. I need to start using field guides again. Dave W
Matsutake... formerly Armillaria, currently Tricholoma.
