Maine Man
Good day everyone, my wife and I are new at mushroom "Watching", I say that because I fear eating anything until I gain some experience in what is good vs. bad. We have property in Maine on the mid-coast and in Delaware so we got started in this by taking a lot of photos. It has become a bit of an obsession. While at our beach house in Delaware this weekend I discovered this massive group of mushrooms growing at the base of a tree stump I cut down about two years ago. It was a hard wood tree but surrounded by many pines. They seem to grow in groups and as they get bigger the cap seems to go flat on top of one another. They have a stem that is about 4" long and with a ring under the cap when it grows larger. I would say they are yellowish / brown. The gills underneath are up under the cap completely. There is no bump in the middle of the cap. I have looked at many photos but cant seem to place them. Any guidance would be appreciated. thanks
Dave W
I think these are Armillaria (Honey Mushrooms), but I would need to see additional features in order to gain confidence. Clear photos of cap surfaces (closer view), the undersides of a few caps, and a few stems would be helpful.
Maine Man
Thanks for your quick response. Here are the only other photos i have. They are smaller individuals that were growing at the edge of the cluster and had not flattened out yet. I had to leave this morning and wont be back down there for a while. troutddicted
These are great edibles BUT if its your first time don't eat too many of them as they are known to cause stomach upsets - got rot feeling for some.
Dave W
I recommend par-boiling Armillarias as a prelude to preparing as food. After par-boiling slowly saute and/or add to a stew. Sample a small amount of well-cooked material to determine if there is a sensitivity.
