ChefsWild
Sadly in not great condition, but wow. Flesh was thick and white with a very pleasant taste. Stem was pale with simple striations. Pores were a bit dark, but I don't think they started out as brown.
John Smalldridge
Looks like an older Boletus separans possibly. I ran into one I missed on my first pass through the patch and it had gotten very large. You need to remember that spot for next year. The stems on B. separans are amazing raw! I was more impressed with the flavor and smell of drying B. separans than I was with the other two B.edulis group mushrooms I found this year. ladyflyfsh
Boletes grow huge in very little time. I check my patch every three days during the season and they are the perfect size. Day 4 and they start blowing out.
ChefsWild
Pores started out yellow it looks like.
Dave W
In the original post, the pores look brown to me. Here in my area we get three brown-pored Boletus species that I know, B. vermiculosus, B. vermiculsoides, and B. subgraveolns. The ones seen here do not remind me of any of these species. Chefs, you say the pores started out yellow...?
ChefsWild
The specimens I found were very past prime, but one had some remaining yellow pore patches.
Dave W
Old specimens of just about anything can exhibit unusual characters.
brianf
I find it hard not to kick mushrooms like this. Then, and only then, can you really come to grips with a mushroom's unusual nature. It's incredibly revealing.
