A diagonal section on a fresh young stem should show a fibrous "skin" surrounding a pithy white "stuffing". The stuffing turns reddish-brown in age or if an insect tunnels through. The interior of the stem eventually becomes more-or-less hollow. Scales that are actually little bundles of hairs are found on the disc.
