ChefsWild Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 Both cap and pores were initially pale yellow, the pores darker than the cap. These turned slimy very quickly and the pores went brown. They did not stain.
Dave W Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 Were these found growing near pine trees? Or maybe some other conifer?
ChefsWild Posted September 3, 2015 Author Report Posted September 3, 2015 Yes, habitat was mixed pine with some assorted deciduous.
Dave W Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 Probably a species of Suillus. In my bolete guide, S. hirtellus looks like a possibility. Most types of Suillus, unless very young and firm, cook up slimy. My favorite in the genus is S. spraguei (formerly S. pictus), called the Painted Bolete. I believe it has a mainly northern distribution in NA.
