ChefsWild
Edible? I know some of the blue stainers are sickeners.
Dave W
The reticulations on the stalk suggest B. tenax, but this species does not stain blue. B. subtomentosus is reported as having ribs on the stalk that form a partial reticulatum, and flesh that stains slightly blue. So maybe subtomentosus fits. B. spadiceus is another possibility. This is one of the boletes that has probably been transferred from genus Boletus to Xerocomus. These types have pores that are wide and sometimes stretched out near where they connect to the stem. To my knowledge, none of these types are sickeners. The edible features are, however, are mediocre at best, with a large percentage of the cap composed of tubes that cook up rather slimy.
