ChefsWild
Durham, NC. None were blue staining. Actually none of these seemed to stain at all, though I observed older specimens that had darkened as they got soggy. Some distinct differences in stem patterning so suspect different species. They smell AMAZING. Closeup from above image. Closeup from above image. A third species?
Dave W
1st pic, yellow pores... possibly Boletus tenax. 1st pic grayish pores. When this mushroom is sliced, does it stain red and/or blue?... possibly different colors at different times? Reminds me of Tylopilus sordidus. Third species... I think Boletus subglabripes. ChefsWild
None of these stain in any way when sliced or bruised. When decomposed or severely bruised to the point of maceration and exposed to air for some hours, they darkened a bit and got soggy.
Dave W
No staining eliminates Tylopilus sordidus from consideration for the grayish one. Porphyrellus (genus) is another possibility.
ChefsWild
The greyish one cut in half to show depth.
Dave W
Hmmm. Really reminds me of T. sordidus, but without the staining. If I get another idea I'll post it. For the time being, I'm stumped by this one.
ChefsWild
Any chance of these being toxic?
Dave W
I think they're all likely to be safe. Check for bitterness. Proceed with caution when trying any new mushroom species.
