MOFunGuy
We just received our complimentary copy of THE BOOK OF FUNGI. It's 656 pages with 2000 color plates. It's not comprehensive, though one might think it should be given it's size. It's a worldwide reference with emphasis on Europe (publishers in the U.K.), so that may be a limitation for some of us here in the U.S. However, it's pretty impressive with excellent quality life/actual size photos of shrooms. And of course I'm saying that because some of my photos were included. U.of Chicago Press Amazon Facebook The neat thing about the mushroom community is how easily accessible it is for us strange people to share our strange interests. The websites (like this one), the Mycological Societies, the newsletters, forays, and even a few old-fashioned books are still made so that ordinary people enjoying a chance to get outdoors and discover a bit of nature, can share it. Gotta get my boots on and join The Morel Madness/Fungal Flu that is hitting as we speak! MOFunGuy
Dave W
Congrats MOFun on having two of your photos used in THE BOOK OF FUNGI! I do not recall ever IDing Crepidotus cinnabarinus. Perhaps I have passed it by thinking "there's another Cinnabar-red Polypore." I imagine that, unless one looks underneath the caps, the Cinnabar Oysterling looks like Pycnoporus cinnabarinus. The book includes over 650 pages with very nice color photos; some of common species, others of uncommon or unusual species. There is a section on lichens. I think we paid about $36 for this hardcover book, a real good deal. http://www.press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/B/bo11308904.html
Heather
Been meaning to mention this. The Connecticut Valley Mycological Association, at its annual March Mushroom Madness Meeting, invited Maine resident and mycologist Greg Marley to speak. I already had his book Chanterelle Dreams and Amanita Nightmares, a wonderful read on "The Love, Lore and Mystique of Mushrooms", packed with information, anecdotes, and recipes. Whether a beginner or seasoned veteran hunter, anyone who enjoys looking for wild mushrooms will enjoy this book. Oh, and, he is a fine speaker as well; clear, informed, and funny.
