1shotwade
Ustilago maydis, Mexican truffle, CORN SMUTE? I read a reference to this on another board and was really surprised! I'm sure someone on here has tried it,but,I think I'd have to get used to that one. Wade
ladyflyfsh
I have been wanting to get my hands on some corn smut. I know people who grow it intentioanally. I really want to try it. One day I hope! I hear it is like corn and truffles combined.
1shotwade
You're braver than I am! I just don't see it happening! Wade
John Smalldridge
I'm sure thre are corn fields somewhere in Floida. I usually see it on dent corn in late summer after good rains. Farmers don't mind giving permission for you picking it most of the time.
Dave W
Hmmm. We've got lots of corn fields around here. What are the season and/or range for Ustilago maydis? I have been under the impression this is strictly a southern NA thing.
1shotwade
Well,I'm here in southeastern Indiana which is part of the corn belt. I've seen this stuff all my life. Actually as children we were warned to "not tough it 'cause it's poison!" Maybe that has something to do with my feeling I could never eat it! Dave W
Actually, now I recall a conversation with Britt Bunyard --editor of FUNGI MAGAZINE-- in which he related collecting corn smut near the campus of Penn State University. What time of year have you generally seen this, Wade?
1shotwade
I'd hate to try and put a finger on that but best I can remember maybe starting in late June and on thru the dry season.Seems like the first appearances are just about the time corn is tasseling out. The only real info I have on it is that provided to me which was a link to wikipedia. It did state something about it's use being the first 2-3 weeks of it's life.I actually just went back and found the link posted below. Wish I could be of more help but at least I'm trying!Ha! Later Wade en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_smut
Dave W
Thanks Wade. The info is helpful.
ladyflyfsh
Britt Bunyard grows it intentionally on his small farm in Wisconsin. There was a big article about it in Fungi Magazine a while back. It was even on the front cover.
Dave W
I have the copy of FUNGI, ladyflyfish. I'll dig it out and re-read the material on corn smut. I really should have this on my "bucket list."
