Jenn86 Posted November 13, 2024 Report Posted November 13, 2024 Hi all! I know that these may seem like stupid noob questions, but I have a few questions about honey mushrooms that I would like answered before feeling truly confident hunting honey mushrooms (without killing myself or my family), so here we go: Β First, I want to describe my understanding of honeys, to make sure that I am on the right page: Honey mushrooms are usually honey-brown to cream colored; convex, to umbate, to flat cap with age with a slightly darker area in the middle; lightly textured on cap; cream colored gills with a white spore print. Is this description correct? Am I missing any defining characteristics (other than spore print...more on that in a minute)? Β Second, for the mushrooms meeting the description above, brown spore print=death and white spore print=edible...is this statement correct for ALL variants of deadly and edible varieties? What I mean by this is are there any "but"'s here? Are there any other things that I need to look for to make sure that I am being safe? Β Third, do honey mushrooms grow singly as well as clustered? Similarly, does Deadly Gallerina grow in clusters or only singly? I understand that there are several species that fall into the "honey mushroom" category. What do I need to know regarding this? Β I have researched much of this on Google, but I would really like an actual human to opine so that we can be safe. We went walking in the woods on our property today and we found a HUGE (several hundred square feet) area dotted here and there with the mushrooms in the pictures. If we had bothered to sit and look for a while (more than we were while walking) then we would have probably found hundreds in the leaf litter. The area is surrounded and dotted with many species of trees, and doubtless there were many species of tree contributing roots to the area. None were visible through the leaf litter. The specimens that I collected (just a few to test) were on what appeared to be dirt (no visible roots without digging). I brought home seven specimens and placed them on black/white paper for spore print, and all came out white. So this line of thought brings me to.... Β Question #3: If deadly galerina grows side-by-side with honeys (as I have seen in articles and videos....correct me if I'm wrong!) how on earth do you check every cap yo make sure that they won't kill you without spoiling your mushrooms? Will a spore print work as well if the mushrooms are in the fridge? Β And my optional question is whether or not people have had GI problems with honeys? We will start slow and work our way up, but I am just curious if anyone would like to share any anecdotes. Β I know this has been long! Thank you for taking the time to read all the way to this point, and I sincerely appreciate any input! By the way,Β the pictured mushrooms were in little groups, but there were FAR more that were stand-alones. This made me think they might be galerinas. Quote
