eat-bolete Posted May 24, 2015 Report Posted May 24, 2015 Hello fellow fungivores! It's been a damn long off-season, but the parks are slowly but surely waking up. Here's my find from today. One is, I thnk, a reishi (possibly G. tsugae) the other one I've no clue. Do you?
Dave W Posted May 24, 2015 Report Posted May 24, 2015 Hi eat-bolete. How's the weather in LI? Dry here in PA. Polypore is a Reishi. If found growing on hemlock, then it's Ganoderma tsugae. This is the most common "varnish shelf" in my area. I have attempted to use Reishi by making a tea. The product did not set well with me... slightly upset stomach. I have heard that Resihi requires special preparation. I found some today! Second mushroom --gray gills-- looks like Stropharia rugosoannulata, the Wine Cap Mushroom. Caps are a good edible, especially when young. Looks like the partial veil on yours clung to the cap margin instead of forming a ring on the stalk. Spore print should be very dark purplish. G. tsugae.
eat-bolete Posted May 25, 2015 Author Report Posted May 25, 2015 Hi Dave, thanks for letting me know about Reishi upsetting your stomach, I'll give it a try myself but will be more cautious now. Weather is dry. When it rains, it's usually 0.1" or so...forecast looks promising for the next 10 days with numerous rainy days. Hopefully it will turn things around. Good luck foraging.
4rum Posted May 31, 2015 Report Posted May 31, 2015 Nice photos. I lucked into a patch of those wine caps. They are very good table fare.
