HGMush Posted October 6, 2024 Report Posted October 6, 2024 Hello! I spotted a few clusters of mushrooms growing at the base of an oak tree in Massachusetts in September-now (early October) that at first blush look a lot like honey mushrooms. BUT the spore print is pinkish/rusty brown and the gills are yellow-ish. Any thoughts on ID? Quote
ZUnit Posted October 14, 2024 Report Posted October 14, 2024 They look a little like Psilocybe Cubensis or Liberty Caps. I have no idea what they are. Quote
michele Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 are you sure the mushroom in the second picture is one of those in the first? Quote
Dave W Posted November 24, 2024 Report Posted November 24, 2024 I think these are a species of Gymnopilus. The growth pattern and spore print color --rusty orangish-- point in this direction. Genus Pholiota also makes sense. Quote
michele Posted November 25, 2024 Report Posted November 25, 2024 the fisrt picture is Armillaria mellea, almost for sure. The print spore is of another mushroom, in my opinion Quote
troutddicted Posted November 25, 2024 Report Posted November 25, 2024 My thoughts exactly Michele- doesn’t appear to be so… perhaps the mushroom printed was picked near the clump of pictured honeys and assumed to be the same species? The clumped mushrooms are young while the printed mushroom is dehydrated pretty good. Quote
