filo Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Is this trametes versicolor? I don't know which tree it is growing on, but it is still at least partially alive since it has spring buds. On the sunny side of the tree the surface is blue, while on shady side it is pale. Green algae colour is visible on some fungi on both sunny and shady side.. Btw I can see on the net there are pictures of T. versicolor with various colours. On what does it depend, the wood it is growing on?
Dave W Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Possibly T. versicolor. But I think a couple others should be considered. When showing lots of gray, T. versicolor is easily confused with T. hirsuta. Pores seem a bit large for T. versicolor. T. villosa is another grayish Turkey-tail look-alike with larger pores that become elongated in age. T. versicolor has a velvety cap surface, but is not as truly hairy as the other two species mentioned. Both T. versicolor and T. hirsuta occur on a wide variety of wood types, but usually hardwood species. T. villosa is reported to occur on both hardwood and conifer wood. Mushroom Expert says it prefers eastern red cedar.
