Weajiin Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 Today I found two mushrooms on the side of the road while picking up litter. The date is March 26 and I live in north-west Indiana. When I poke the top of the mushrooms spores erupt in clouds. It was 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit last week and then a cold front came in with snow and 30s for about four days and now its moving up towards 40 with all the snow melting in a rainstorm about two nights ago. All help is appreciated, thank you very much. The photos are attached.
Dave W Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 These are puffballs left over from last fall. Definitely not ones that recently formed. They look to be fairly large, maybe 3 inches or more in diameter. Genus Calvatia is one possibility, if they are thicker than 2.5 inches in diameter. Maybe Calvatia craniiformis. This species usually has a roughly spherical upper portion atop a slightly thinner cylindrical base. If they are small, then Bovista may be considered as the genus. Weajiin, is your location DeMotte, Inidana?
Weajiin Posted March 27, 2015 Author Report Posted March 27, 2015 They are small I should have added something in the picture for reference. The head was about the size of a pingpong ball. Thank you for such a swift reply and yes I do live in that area. Ill get more pictures tomorrow.
Dave W Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 I think maybe a species of Bovista. Usually, with Bovista, there's a threadlike attachment to the ground. But this attachment often breaks and the old wind-blown puffball shell tumbles across a lawn/field.
