Puddleduck Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 Hello! I am new to this forum so I don't know much about what to do but I do need some help identifying mushrooms! I was at lunch with family today and my sister showed me tons of mushrooms in grass! I will put a few photos and hopefully you can help me identify them! I can give you more info about each one if you need it! I will start by putting 2 pics up but can put up more if needed. These are the only shots I got of the purple mushrooms and yes, they are actually purple it isn't my camera! Thanks!
Dave W Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 I agree with Duggstar. It's a Russula. There are several purple-capped Russula species. One possibility is Russula mariae.
Puddleduck Posted November 12, 2014 Author Report Posted November 12, 2014 Thank you both! That helps a lot! Dave W, I googled Russula mariae and it looks like you are correct! How did you know what it was?
Dave W Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 Over the years, I've observed hundreds of examples of R. mariae. But I'm still not absolutely certain of this ID for your observation, Puddleduck. Genus Russula includes hundreds of species and ID can be very tricky. Seeing a photo of the underside (gills) sometimes increases confidence in an ID such as this one.
Puddleduck Posted November 12, 2014 Author Report Posted November 12, 2014 I didn't get any shots of the gills…. Too bad. I will leave it for now because I like having a rough name and I don't eat them so if I don't get a perfectly correct name it is all right. Thanks for you help!
vitog Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 Russula mariae is not likely to be the correct identification for this specimen because R. mariae is described as an eastern North American species and is not listed for BC in either the http://www.svims.ca/council/distri.htm%C2'> or the E-Flora BC Website. As Dave pointed out, Russula species are difficult to identify, although the genus is pretty obvious.
