CajunShroomer3578 Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Found this specimen here in South Louisiana growing on a dead tree lying on the ground. Not sure what kind of tree so I posted a picture of it as well. Found a few look a likes in my field but hadn't 100% identified it. Also just thought I'd share it with you guys and gals because I'm sure you'll can appreciate its beauty.
CajunShroomer3578 Posted October 27, 2014 Author Report Posted October 27, 2014 Forgot the picture of tree... I apologize
Dave W Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Looks like Auricularia (Tree Ears). Anther possibility is a species of Exidia. Auricularia is more rubbery than Exidia. Exidia is less firm, stretchable, and the lobes (when present) are small, generally an inch or so wide. Auricularia lobes are up to 4 inches wide. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/auricularia_auricula.html http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~12103~gid~~source~gallerydefault.asp
CajunShroomer3578 Posted October 28, 2014 Author Report Posted October 28, 2014 Thanks Dave !! Pretty interesting....my field guide says if it is a Auricularia auricula it's edible. I noticed mushroom expert says different. Not that I plan on eating it I was wondering your take on that and have you ever tried it. ?
Dave W Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Fresh Tree Ears are not very good, IMO. But dried/rehydrated, they are good in soups/stir-fries, on account of the crunchy texture they develop. Similar species are used this way in Chinese cuisine. I have no info on the edibility of Exidia species.
