vgc
I found this on a hike in the woods (Central NJ). Don't know which tree. Is this chaga or is it just rot?
Dave W
Difficult to say, based upon just the one photo that's hindered by glare and shadow. Maybe it's where a Chaga (sclerotium of Inonotus obliquus) had been growing but was harvested? But, it doesn't really look like it to me. What type of tree? vgc
I think it was hickory but definitely not birch.
Dave W
Not likely to be Inonotus obliquus (Chaga) if growing on hickory.
