1left Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 I've found a couple mushrooms today in a 2 needle Jack Pine area which I'm hopeful are Tricholoma portentosum. The slippery cap is 4 inches across and the stem is 3 1/2 inches long and 1 1/4 thick, the insects got the best of these 2, but I'm interested in getting to know T portentosum if it grows in my area here in New Brunswick, eastern Canada? This could be a good mushroom to look for in White & or Jack pine areas in November, but first I need to find a few, I was expecting T portentosum to have a darker gray cap so I'm not too confident on this being it, though the yellow tints in the gills seems a bit promising. thanks for checking it out
Dave W Posted October 19, 2014 Report Posted October 19, 2014 IDing a gray Trich from a photo is tricky. But these do look like portentosum to me. The lemon-yellow tint on the whitish gills is a good indicator. Also, sometimes when potentosum is dry and the cap is shiny, there's a slightly purple sheen on parts of the cap surface. I saw a collection like this once, at the NJ Fungus Festival. I have also read about this trait in a field guide. Some of the gray Trichs are bitter-tasting. So these may be easily distinguished from portentosum.
