Hello all! Just found these beauties in the woods near my house today. Figured with all the rain we had perhaps the popinkis would be out in force. No luck with the honeys but then I cam across a well decayed stump with these guys clustered all around it. Can anyone confirm if these are the hen of the woods/sheepshead? I assume the are edible? Thanks and good luck to everyone, should be an exicting next couple of days!!

Those certainly look like Sheep's Head (Grifola frondosa) to me (although the photos are a bit out of focus).

These are young specimens. So it looks to me like a new fruiting of Hens is underway here in NE PA. Thanks orlov! Now I know to check my local spots during the next 7-10 days.

I wouldn't totally give up on the popinkies. Only the mushrooms that were primed to fruit before the big rain event would have come out so quickly as those Hens. Other types may begin to kick in during the next two weeks.

4" measured in my front yard here in Hunlock Creek.
