future_mushroomer Posted October 14, 2014 Report Posted October 14, 2014 I'm completely new to mushroom hunting. I was out in the rain in the woods this morning and came across what I think are two different types of mushrooms. Both mushrooms were growing from live trees where a branch had been broken off. The first picture is one that is higher up in a tree. The next two pictures are of one that was lower to the ground. Does anyone know what species of mushrooms these are? Are they poisonous? I have recently read about Destroying Angel and Death Cap, and now I'm scared to death of even touching wild mushrooms. LOL! Thank you.
Dave W Posted October 14, 2014 Report Posted October 14, 2014 They may or may not represent different species. Seeing more details would be helpful. But I'll venture a couple of proposals. First one appears to have fluffy deposits/scales on the stalk. This may be in association with a partial veil that once sheathed the lowed stalk and covered to gills. In this case, the first photo may show Pleurotus dryinus. The last photo may be the same type, except more mature. But I don't see the texture on the surface of the stalk very well. Another possibility is Hypsizygus tessulatus. Clearer photos of the stalks and the gills are necessary to arrive at a more confident ID proposal. For the first one, another possibility is Neolentinus lepideus (formerly Lentinus lepideus).
future_mushroomer Posted October 14, 2014 Author Report Posted October 14, 2014 Thank you. I will get better photos in the future.
