JustinC
Kings or maybe Xanthoconium? The stems are fairly smooth but they have been sitting around for 2 days and I washed them that matters. Found in North Central PA at about 2000ft elevation. Mixed hardwoods and some spruce and firs too. Working on spore print now. Thanks.
Tasso
I don't see any reticulation on the stipe, so probably Xanthoconium.
JustinC
Thanks. You think Xanthoconium affine or montaltoense? I tried putting windex (ammonia) and no real change in color.
Dave W
These are almost certainly Boletus separans. Up until a few years ago this species was housed in genus Xanthoconium. DNA says it's a Boletus, and in the same section as B. edulis (ie. genetically related to B. edulis). So, it's considered to be a hardwood King Bolete. Not as dense-fleshed as B. edulis, and thus not as good when used fresh. But sliced/dehydrated B. separans is (almost) as good as B. edulis when used in recipes that call for dried cops. Kevin Hoover
I’d use true ammonia instead of windex. Ammonia dropped on the lilac colored parts of the stem will stain blue on Seperans. Can I ask what part of North Central PA you’re in? I’m in Clearfield County
JustinC
Thanks everyone! I was in Elk County. Never saw so many mushrooms in my entire life.
