Dave W
I'm pretty sure this is Fistulina hepatica, the Beefsteak Mushroom. To verify, see if the tube layer --ie. layer of material that leads to the pores-- can be separated into individual tubes, like little straws that come apart from one another. This is an unusual trait of F. hepatica, an edible fungus. It's probably best enjoyed raw, although I hesitate to suggest eating wild mushrooms uncooked. Like my mom used to say, "you don't know where that's been!" Well, actually it's been on that oak tree, exposed to the elements and animals. Kevin Hoover
Dave, Out of curiosity, do you find many of them up your way? I never have found them in central PA or seen them brought to any club tables. But friends in south central PA talk about find them often. Dave W
I don't find F. hepatica every year... maybe around once every 3-4 years.
