Glen Walker
Currently in Missouri near the Lake of the Ozarks, when I came across mushrooms that I had not seen before. The internet did not really help with identifying them. I know that it is a type of Bolete mushroom but is it a Pallid or Bitter or am I completely wrong. svs
You hypothesis sounds reasonable. Pallid usually has yellowish pores and sometime bluish staining, but best way to test is to try for taste, if it is bitter it is likely tylopilus, can't say which sp. Dave W
Imleria pallida (formerly Boletus pallidus) is a species sometimes referred to a the "Pallid Bolete." The one seen here is not this species. This one is a species of Tylopilus. One species in particular --Tylopilus felleus-- is sometimes referred to as the "Bitter Bolete." But there are other types of boletes that taste bitter; several species of Tylopilus. The one seen here does not look like T. felleus. I think it may be T. violatinctus, which is also bitter https://boletes.wpamushroomclub.org/product/tylopilus-violatinctus/. Seeing the stem would possibly be helpful.
