Eastcoastboy
I was walking out in the woods just beside the house and these caught my eye. Found growing out an old dead apple tree knot. Amazing how nothing is wasted in nature. Any idea what these would be?
Dave W
Need to see the underside of one of these. Also, is the flesh soft? Firm? Woody?

Picture #2 is of the underside. flesh is soft. No foul odour. Really curious if it could be edible.
Dave W
Oh, okay! I think this is Tyromyces chioneus, the "White Cheese Mushroom". Considered to be inedible; not sure why. I have never tried eating this species. I would recommend not experimenting. The common name is probably due to the somewhat soft texture similar to cheese. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/tyromyces_chioneus.html
Calvert
Yeah, it's a Tyromyces. I have a hard enough time time trying to distinguish them in real life, that I hesitate to do so based on a photo. Edit: but Dave's guess is a good one.
