Found growing out of an old apple tree knot???

Recommended Posts

Oh, okay!

I think this is Tyromyces chioneus, the "White Cheese Mushroom". Considered to be inedible; not sure why. I have never tried eating this species. I would recommend not experimenting. The common name is probably due to the somewhat soft texture similar to cheese.    http://www.mushroomexpert.com/tyromyces_chioneus.html

Yeah, it's a Tyromyces.  I have a hard enough time time trying to distinguish them in real life, that I hesitate to do so based on a photo.

Edit: but Dave's guess is a good one.
