Eastcoastboy
Good day folks, i recently decided to take on mushroom hunting as a new hobby. I never really paid too much attention to the finer details when seeing wild mushrooms in the past. Now that i’m looking, i am noticing all of the subtle differences and it seems overwhelming trying to ID sometimes. This little fella was found in a cluster of about 15 others like it in a cow pasture. They were the only different bunch in sea of other LBM’s. I Found them right next to a cow patty. I believe they are Panaeolus papilionaceus. Can anyone confirm?
DShroomGuy
Definitely a panaeolus. Not sure of exact species though.
Calvert
Yes, Panaeolus (due to the mottled gills). It's not a genre I've ever spent much time identifying. Looking at it's description, it seems to fit the description quite well, but I'm not sure which other Panaeolus are close in appearance. Dave W
Panaeolus papilionaceus looks like a reasonable ID. Do any of the mushrooms show prominent little flaps hanging from the cap margins? That's a feature associated with P. papilioaceus. To be more certain, I would use a microscope to examine spores.
