foxfire900
I found a bunch of these this morning growing at the base of dead trees (beech and I think maple) in Central New York. Are they a species of Laetiporus? Thanks!
Dave W
This looks like the early stages of a rather small fruit body of Meripilus sumstinei (Black-staining Polypore). A few of the fronds show darkening along the fringes. Otherwise, the growth pattern and ground color look like this species. Rub the margin of a frond and see if it darkens within 30 minutes. I generally don't harvest M. sumstinei for eating. But, someone once gave me some Meripilus jerky that was cured in Thai spices. It was really good and had a nice long shelf-life. foxfire900
interesting, thank you! I noticed earlier today on another mushroom forum a few folks had shared photos of Meripilus spp. so I guess they're having a moment right now.
