Tasso
A friend surprised me with a great Christmas gift: Oregon white truffles,Tuber oregonense.
Luigi Daniele
Lucky you, fratello!
Tasso
Yes indeed! I plan to make tagliatelle with cream and parmigiano, with the truffle shaved on top. Later I'll make risotto al funghi crowned with shaved truffle. If there's any left, I'll use it for scrambled eggs.

Luigi Daniele
I have heard that the Oregon truffles are not as good as Alba truffles. I have also heard that they’re better. Thoughts? :)
Tasso
I've had them both and I would rate the Oregon ones as second only to Alba truffles. They got a bad reputation years ago when people only harvested them by raking, which led to a lot of unripe truffles being sold. No unripe truffle from anywhere is any good. Now that many people are using dogs, who only find ripe ones, their reputation has improved. In fact, the company where my friend got the truffles for me also have a business training dogs to hunt truffles. People still rake for them, which is unfortunate as it disturbs the habitat and will probably lead to fewer truffles where ever raking has occurred, unless the raker is very careful. Epicmushroomhunter
That's wonderful. I only had truffle oil, but I know it is not real. It is mostly synthetic fragrances in the commercial oils.

Thanks, fratello. How far down are the truffles, generally speaking?
Tasso
Luigi, I can't answer your question because I've never hunted them. If people can rake for them, I can't imagine that they're very deep.

Irina
is there anything vaguely similar to this that could be grown in the northeast?
vitog
Irina, I've recently read about the Appalacian Truffle, Tuber canaliculatum, which is found as far north as Quebec. It is supposed to be tasty (aromatic), and tree seedlings inoculated with its mychorrizae are supposedly available. Just google the scientific name to get more details.
