foxfire900
found growing near hemlocks in upstate new york. dark brown spore print and flesh did not stain or bruise when cut. it had a strong smell - I thought it smelled like old bouillabaise, slightly fishy and scented with anise, but my co-worker thought it smelled like motor oil, possibly a phenolic odor? Dave W
Even when found in perfect condition Agaricus mushrooms are often very difficult to ID to species. The confusing odor profile reported for this one may be partly due to the mushroom being well past maturity. In general, Agaricus mushrooms that have an unpleasant odor should not be consumed.
