wyzoon
I found this in my lawn under the hedge in the UK. I think it's an agaricus of some type but not sure which. I've cut it open, it didn't stain, and it smells mushroomy. The younger ones are have pinkish gills and the older have brownish. Any ideas? Dave W
I find even the North American species of Agaricus often difficult to ID. Not sure if the British ones are different. But, I agree about these representing a species of Agaricus. Note how the gills do not reach the stalk (free gills). Spore print color will be fairly dark brown for these (and all Agaricus mushrooms).
wyzoon
Any good tips on how to determine if they are edible given the family is hard to id?
CajunShroomer3578
It is always up to the individual to make their decision if a specimen is edible. Agaricus sp. are not the group I’d say that are easily distinguished through pictures on the web. I’ve been researching mushrooms for about 7-8 years and took 4 years before I gained enough knowledge and confidence before harvesting Agaricus campetris for the table. Way too many white mushrooms that are dangerously toxic
Dave W
Agaricus is a tricky genus, lots of different species and distribution of species tends to be regional.
wyzoon
Great to know! I'll shy away from them for more until I get more experience. Thank you.
