Shroomeddy
mme and my six year old found these the other day next to big rotten stump. Probably an old oak as that's what was around and looked like besides a few large pines. They bruised a blueish green and had rusty orange spore print. When I picked the large one it coated my hand heavy enough with spores that my jeans still are stained after washing them. After a few pics we threw them back as we believe them to be Gymnopilus luteus and not edible. Thanks for any help as this the first ID we feel confident about and we are completely new to this mushroom hunting and are as green as can be but we want to learn. Sorry if this post is out of wack as I am learning to do this pic and posting too.
Dave W
Orange spore print points toward genus Gymnopilus. Blue-green staining suggests Gymnopilus aeruginosus, although I believe this latter trait is also occasionally seen on other Gymnopilus species. I don't think these are G. luteus, which has a smoother more orange cap and tends to grow directly on logs.
