Hen of the Woods vs. Black Staining Polypore

MFSHROOM

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I think I found a couple of safe to eat, similar looking polypores in the yard the other day and was wondering if anyone can confirm.

This guy popped up in the grass the other day, which I'm fairly certain is Hen of the woods. I've observed it growing in this spot in years past...

possibly grifola frondosa

Now I'm fairly certain this next guy is a black staining polypore also found growing a few feet away on an oak stump...

possibly meripilus sumstinei. Observed this mushy growing in this same spot back in July and it seems a fresh one has regrown!

If these are what I believe them to be, does anyone have any opinions on how they compare edibility wise?

I think there may be two different species seen in the photos... first 5 Grifola frondosa (Hen) and the 6/7 Meripilus sumstinei (Black Stainer). But, I'm not sure about 6/7, this may just be an old Grifola.

Grifola (Hen of the Woods) is an excellent edible (if found in an uncontaminated environment). Thorough cooking is recommended.
