rbenn
Calvatia cyathiformis? Didn't see any purple spores nearby though. I believe puffballs are choice edibles. Anyone eat these? Apparently the yellow inside means this one is past due from what I've read. Any thoughts on that? Unfortunately I did find a type of weevil or beetle of some sort that made a small nest in part of it. Not sure what they are called either... bprzyw
RBenn, I think you hit it. I found one, well 3-4, but one was whole. It was pure white inside. I did eat it and it was very good. Dave ID’d it right on. It should be back every year. Pure white is key here. The bug, I would just cut it out. But it’s past it’s prime. rbenn
Thanks for your post. I tossed it, but it was still nice to find a "choice" edible near me.
Kevin Hoover
I’ve found about ten of these so far this year on my property. I left them all alone to spore out, so I’ll see how many I’ll pick next year
Dave W
C. cyathiformis and C. craniiformis are virtually identical except for the color of the mature spores. The best puffball for eating is Calvatia gigantea. But these "Skull-shaped Puffballs" are also good. rbenn, it looks like yours is beginning to turn yellow inside. I would eat only ones that are completely white inside.
rbenn
Thanks. I wasn't sure if the white part was still good but to just avoid the yellow.
Dave W
I'm actually not sure either --about just avoiding the yellow part. But, I like to play it safe.
